TOPIC: "new" RA1 life

Re:"new" RA1 life 14 years, 8 months ago #7184

My preference is for RA-1 at 4/32 shaved. The only reason I did any 3/32 stuff was to replaced damaged tires. I figured 3/32 would be better match for the other used tires.

I just wanted to make that clear.

I have mine shaved to 3/32 for summer use and 4/32 or full tread for winter. They do not last as long but I believe they are faster with less tread.

My new set is approaching 18 cycles and have no tread left (3/32 shaved). Still plenty fast but approaching the end of life. I will run them this weekend. I have been comparing them to a 3 year old set that came with the 924s. Those are at 16 cycles now and still quite fast. I set a new POC track record at Spring Mtn. 2 weeks ago on them and was only 2.5 seconds off the fastest Boxster during the races.

IMO the new tire is just as good.

Joe, yea, when I had bryan bring tires out he said do you want them shaved? I said yea thinking I'd get 4/32nds so I was a bit suprised with 3/32nds, but I figured if thats what everyone is doing...know better now...

related question:

The RA-1 with treads, does the direction of rotation matter for grip, or is it just for best water displacement? My treads are mostly gone anyway, thinking about doing some rotating.

Once shave to 4/32 their is no direction tread left. Run them forward or backwards wet or dry. In the dry full treads can be run both ways too. In wet I would run full treads in the direction indicated.
