I rebuilt 4 engines so far. Every time I installed the lifters that I could compress and reload with solvent or oil. With solvent they compress very easily, with oil is much harder to compress. Still in both cases they are compressible. A 968 engine we rebuilt had a noisy lifter but after cleaned with solvent all lifters felt the same. I don't remember how it felt before.
