TOPIC: Fuel tank swap

Fuel tank swap 6 years, 6 months ago #22053

Has anyone swapped out a steel tank for later model plastic one??

Just pulled the a plastic tank out of my ‘86 donor and debating on swapping into my ‘83 tub. Haven’t looked closely at the 83 to see what would be needed.

Any thought or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

You would need the later car's removable transaxle mount, plus adding the rivnuts into the car's body to mount it.

You also need to move the fuel tank strap mounting points from your late car over to the early car. Use a template for positioning them.

The other thing I am aware of is that the fuel lines are located in different places, so you will need some hoses to adjust for that.

There was a good thread on the 924board.org forum on this, but the pictures may have gone away with the whole Photobucket fiasco.

Thanks for the feedback... does't sounds that painful at all.

I'll look more closely at once I get the '83 up on the lift.

Thanks again!

You need to cut out your currently welded in transaxle brace, and then weld/rivnut in those bolts to hold the late mount.

Not terrible, but it does involve some work.
