A quick search on ebay for something like '944 steering wheel adapter' would probably return some hits with pretty good pictures, but it's basically a piece that bolts under the single nut at the steering column, and includes an offset piece of metal with the Sparco/MOMO-standard 6-hole bolt pattern to either bolt an aftermarket wheel or a quick-release adapter to.

Gary, since you mentioned splines,

According to MOMO,

If none of that is really a problem for our cars, then I'm not interested in paying twice as much for something.

I've also not seen any noticeable galling, so I don't think that's really something to worry about. If it were me, I would save the money by avoiding the MOMO, and put it towards something like a Traqmate, a more comfortable seat/harness, etc.
