TOPIC: The value of lexan...

The value of lexan... 13 years, 11 months ago #7357

This weekend showed the value of lexan to one racer.

Went out in qualifying and forgot to latch the hood pins. Hood flipped over the car. In fact the hood ripped off the mounts and bend over the front part of the car.

However the lexan windshiled was not broke. It did get a little scratched. He was able to bend the hood back enough bolt the hood back on the car and complete the race later that day.

If he had glass his day would have been done.

Then again. if he had a stock hood latch....

Having had this happen to me twice in other cars I can say that is a money saver for sure. Both times I forgot to put hood pins back in. I am planning on keeping my stock hood latch.

So far the 924s has not even gotten a chip in the windshield. Lucky I guess. My last 944 seemed to get a new chip every weekend.

Joe what is the weight difference between the 3/16" lexan and stock glass?

Is that using the 3/16" or 1/4"?

And was the 5 lbs saving factoring in the center brace needed for lexan? Or just the windshield itself?

It was my little adventure this weekend that Joe is talking about, and I posted a short video of it here: www.vimeo.com/11467220

This happened at about 80 mph but luckily it was on a part of the track with a big paved runoff area to the right, so it wasn't too hard to get off track safely. Needless to say, I'm sold on Lexan!

As far as weight savings, we scaled things out as we did it and it was around 7 pounds, including the center bar we welded in.
